Round 8: Adding Wings:
Place the animal down on a hard surface with the body face ‘up’ and the feet facing you.  Locate the 7 centre front sts and mark them with a stitch marker (the wings will be placed on either side of these sts). Locate the far right marked st.  Count over 1 st to the right of it, if this is not the next unworked st of the body, crochet over to this stitch. (If left handed you will locate the left st and count over 1 st to the left).
Fold the left wing in half so that the yarn tails meet. Place the first wing in front of the body to the right of the marked sts (left if you’re left handed).   Working through both sides (end of rounds 1 and 3) of the wing (opening facing forward), and the next unworked st on the body, sc.
Working through the body only, scdec, sc in the next 3 sts, scdec, (these are your marked sts).  Place the second wing in front of your work (body). Working through both pieces [both sides (end of rounds 1 and 3) of the right wing (opening facing forward), and the next unworked st on the body], sc in the next st, working through the body only, sc in the next 2 sts, scdec, sc in the next 2 sts (12).
After completing the round (or wait until after Round 9), pull the tails into the body on either side of the stitch used to attach the wings.  Tie the tails together on the inside of the body.

Round 9: *2sc* 12 times (24)
Rounds 10-12: sc in each st (24)
Round 13: *sc in the next 6 sts, scdec* 3 times (21)
Round 14: *sc in the next 5 sts, scdec* 3 times (18)
Round 15: *sc in the next 4 sts, scdec* 3 times (15)

Adding Eyes:     If using safety eyes, place 6 sts apart on Round 12 of the body/head. Begin Stuffing.
If you haven’t already, pull the tails into the body on either side of the stitch used to attach the wings.  Tie the tails together on the inside of the body.  Begin Stuffing.

Round 16: *sc in the next 3 sts, scdec* 3 times (12)
Finish stuffing
Round 17: *scdec* 6 times (6)
End off leaving a 6 inch tail, cinch the last 6 sts together using the FLO of Round 17  and weave in the end.

Adding Ears:     Place stitch markers on Round 14, 9 sts apart.  (2 rounds up and 2 sts towards the outside of each eye).
Eye 1: Attach yarn under the first marked stitch.  Working all sts in the same marked st (ch2, dc, ch1, trc, ch1, dc, ch2, ss).
Eye 2: Attach yarn under the second marked stitch.  Working all sts in the same marked st (ch2, dc, ch1, trc, ch1, dc, ch2, ss).
  End off, weave in ends
Nose:
Using Pink, insert  your needle horizontally 1 round down from eyes under 2 sts.  (Note – to make it centred you may need to insert needle in the middle of the sts as shown).  Repeat 2-3 times though the same set of holes.  Tie off and weave in ends.

Kid Safety First! Embroidering vs. Safety Eyes:

When it comes to crafting for little ones, safety is always a top priority. While both safety eyes and embroidered eyes can add personality to your bat, there are some key considerations.

  • Quick: Safety eyes are great for a quick and secure finish, and give a cute, kawaii kind of look to your amigurumi doll
  • Customizable: Embroidered eyes offer a more customizable option. If you’re gifting your bat to a young child, embroidery eyes might be the safer bet.

Ultimately, the choice is yours – pick the method that best suits your project and peace of mind!
