Flamingo Free Crochet Pattern – How to Make a No Sew Lil’ Bitty Flamingo

I’m so excited to introduce the next stuffed animal crochet pattern in the Lil’ Bitty series. Meet the No Sew Lil’ Bitty Flamingo Free Crochet Pattern! The Lil’ Bitty series has been designed to be a super quick project, with minimal sewing in mind (just like the Pocket Pal series and Flip Flop series). The series features a different way to crochet an open ended piece onto the body, this allows you to stuff the open ended piece after attaching.

The Lil’ Bitty Flamingo free crochet pattern has been designed using Premier Parfait Chunky (also shown in Hobbii Honey Bunny) to create an adorable 5″ friend. If you’ve never used these yarns for andefaul app amigurumi project, then you’re missing out. These chenille style super bulky weight (6) yarns (which works up similar to a bulky (5) weight yarn) makes some of the most soft, squishy lovable stuffies. Don’t have access to this yarn? No problem!

This pattern can be completed using ANY of your favourite amigurumi yarns as well. Just adjust the hook size accordingly and follow the pattern as written. The only thing that changes is the size of the safety eyes and finished product.

All the patterns in the New Lil’ Bitty Series work up super quickly and easily with minimal sewing required. However, the Lil’ Bitty Flamingo is a completely NO SEW project with optional face shaping and eye highlights that can be embroidered on after.

Puff Stitch – *YO, insert hook into indicated st, YO, pull up loop* 3 times, YO, pull through all 7 loops on the hook.
Sleepy Eyes

Notes: 

•  #sc, eg. (2sc, 3sc, etc) shows the number of scs to be completed in the indicated st
• Sts listed between brackets are all worked in the same st, eg. (hdc, dc)
• I highly recommend using a stitch marker to help keep track of the rounds for the body/head
• The pattern has both a ‘sew’ and no sew option for the limbs shown in the Body/Head section.

Recommended Sequence for the Lil’ Bitty Flamingo Free Crochet Pattern: 

 It is highly recommended to complete the Lil’ Bitty Flamingo crochet pattern in the order the pattern is written. (especially if you are using the no-sew option for the limbs).

Start your Lil’ Bitty Flamingo Free Crochet Pattern:

Wings (make 2):

The wings are worked from the “tip” to the body, in continuous rounds.  

Using Hibiscus, create a  Magic Ring

Round 1: 6sc in the ring (6)
Round 2: *sc, 2sc* 3 times (9)
Round 3:  *sc in the next 2 sts, 2sc* 3 times (12)
Round 4: *sc in the next 3 sts, 2sc* 3 times (15)
Rounds 5-6: sc in each st (15)
Round 7: *sc in the next 3 sts, scdec* 3 times (12)
Round 8: *scdec* 6 times (6)
Do not stuff
Flatten and sc through both sides (3sts). 
End off leaving a 12 inch tail if sewing. 

Feet (make 2):

The feet are worked from the “toes” to the body, in continuous rounds.  

Using Peach, create a Magic Ring

Round 1: 6sc in the ring (6)
Round 2:  *2sc* 6 times (12)
Round 3:  *sc in the next st, 2sc* 6 times (18)
Rounds 4-5: sc in each st (18)
Round 6: *scdec* 6 times, sc in the next 6 sts (12)
Begin Stuffing
Round 7: *scdec* 6 times (6)
Finish Stuffing foot portion (leave the rest unstuffed)
Rounds 8-10: sc in each st (6)
Flatten (add an extra sc if needed so the toes are at the front) and sc through both sides (3sts).  
End off, leaving a 12 inch tail if sewing.

Beak:

Made in continuous rounds beginning with the tip of the beak

Using Black, create a Magic Ring

Round 1: 4sc in the Ring (4)
Round 2: *sc, 2sc* twice (6)
Round 3: *sc in each of the next 2sts, 2sc* twice (8), change to Peach
Round 4: *sc in the next 3 sts, 2sc* twice (10), change to White
Round 5: *sc in the next 4 sts, 2sc* twice (12)
Round 6: sc in each st (12)
Round 7: *sc, scdec* 4 times (8) 
Stuff lightly, ss in the next st to end off.  Mark the last 2 worked sts, and the next 2 sts with stitch markers.  These will be the used to crochet the bottom of the beak to the head. (Adjust the 4 stitch markers if needed to allow the colour change to be at the bottom of the beak)
End off leaving a 12 inch tail if sewing to the head. 

Body/Head:

The body and head are worked in one piece from the bottom up in continuous rounds.  

Option 1: Sewing the Feet, Wings and Beak to the body
If you are sewing your feet, wings, and beak onto your body then ‘sc in each st’ for Round  5 (plus tail stitches), Round 13, Round 18 and 19.

Option 2:  Crochet Feet, Wings and Beak to the body
If you are crocheting your feet and wings onto your body please follow the pattern as written for the Body/Head. For assistance in crocheting the limbs on see Videos:

Using Hibiscus, create a Magic Ring

Round 1: 6sc in the ring (6)
Round 2: *2sc* 6 times (12)
Round 3: *sc in the next st, 2sc* 6 times (18)
Round 4: *sc in the next 2 sts, 2sc* 6 times (24)
Round 5 Option 1:  sc in the next 16 sts, *ch8, sc in the next st* 3 times, sc in the last 5 sts (24).

Option 2: Hold your first foot in front of your work (body).  Working through both pieces, sc in the next 3 sts, working through the body only, sc in the next 4 sts, Hold the second foot in front of your work (body).  Working through both pieces, sc in the next 3 sts, working through the body only, sc in the next 6 sts, *ch8, sc in the next st* 3 times, sc in the last 5 sts (24).

Round 6: sc in each sc st (skip over the chs) (24)
Rounds 7-9: sc in each st (24)
Round 10: *sc in the next 2 sts, scdec* 6 times (18)
Round 11: sc in each st (18) 
Begin stuffing
Round 12: *sc in the next st, scdec* 6 times (12)

Option 1: Sew Wings – continue to Round 13

Option 2: Crochet Wings – end off after Round 12 (or crochet over to the indicated stitch determined at the beginning of Round 13) and continue to Round 13.  

Round 13 Option 1: sc in each st (12)

Option 2: Place the animal down on a hard surface with the body face ‘up’ and the feet facing you.  Locate the 2 centre front sts and mark them with a stitch marker (the wings will be placed on either side of these sts). Locate the far right marked st.  Count over 3 sts to the right of it and attach your yarn (Hibiscus) to the body. (If left handed you will locate the left st and count over 3 sts to the left).   Place the first wing in front of the body to the right of the marked sts (left if you’re left handed).  Working through both pieces (beginning with the first st of the wing and the stitch on the body you attached your yarn to), sc in the next 3 sts.  Working through the body only, sc in the next 2 sts (these are your marked sts).  Place the second wing in front of your work (body). Working through both pieces, sc in the next 3 sts, working through the body only, sc in the last 4 sts (12).

Round 14: *sc in the next st, 2sc* 6 times (18)
Round 15: *sc in the next 2 sts, 2sc* 6 times (24)
Round 16: *sc in the next 3 sts, 2sc* 6 times (30)
Round 17: sc in each st (30)
Round 18 Option 1: sc in each st (30)

Option 2:  Place the animal down on a hard surface with the body face ‘up’ and the feet facing you.  Locate the 4 centre front sts and mark them with a stitch marker (these will be the sts the beak is crocheted onto).  Crochet over to the first marked st. Place the beak in front of the body in front of the marked sts.  Working through both pieces beginning with the first marked st of the beak (working inside to the outside) and the next marked stitch on the body, sc in the next 4 sts.  (Mark these 4 sts to help with Round 19).  Working through the body only, sc in the rest of the sts.  (30)

Round 19 Option 1: sc in each st (30)

Option 2:  Working in the Body Only, sc over to the marked sts of the beak (note sts are not shown marked in the photo), working through the front sts of the beak only (skipping the 4 marked beak sts), sc in the next 4 sts, working in the body only, sc in the rest of the sts (30)

Round 20: sc in each st (30)
Round 21: *sc in the next 3 sts, scdec* 6 times (24)
Rounds 22-23: sc in each st (24)
Add safety eyes to Round 19 approximately 8 sts apart, continue stuffing.
Round 24: *sc in the next 2 sts, scdec* 6 times (18)
Round 25: sc in each st (18)
Finish stuffing
Round 26: *sc, scdec* 6 times (12)
Round 27: *scdec* 6 times (6)
End off leaving a 6 inch tail, cinch the last 6 sts together and weave in the ends.

Headband/Bow (optional):

The Headband is made with a long chain joined to form a loop.  The Bow is worked in 1 joined oval round.

Headband:

Using Chenille Bloom Cherry Blossom, ch 30 (or number of chs needed to stretch around the head), join to first chain to form loop (30)
End off, weave in ends.

Bow:

Using Cherry Blossom, ch 15

Round 1: 3dc in 3rd ch from hook, hdc, sc, ss in next 7 chs, sc, hdc, 5dc in the last ch, turn (rotate) and begin working in the bottom of the chs, hdc, sc, ss in the next 7 chs, sc, hdc, 2dc in last ch, join with ss to the first st (32)
End off leaving a 6” tail and weave in ends.  Tie the bow around the headband.

Sewing Placement for the Lil’ Bitty Flamingo Free Crochet Pattern – I highly recommend pinning ALL parts in place BEFORE sewing to make sure everything sits properly and is to your liking 🙂

Note:  Disregard sewing the feet, wings and beak if you’ve already crocheted them on. Feet: Place the Feet at approx Round 5 of the body about 4 sts apart. Sew in place.  When sewing the feet in place I sewed the top of the last FULL ROUND DOWN instead of just the sts from crocheting the round together.

Wings: Place the wings at approx Round 13 of the body, approx 2 sts apart.  Sew in place.  When sewing the wing in place I sewed the top of the last FULL ROUND DOWN instead of just the sts from crocheting the round together.

Beak:  Centre the beak below the eyes placing it between Rounds 17 and 20 of the head.  Stuff lightly and sew down along Round 6 of the beak.

Headband/Bow: Place as desired on the head and sew down if needed.
