The New Pattern Release – Mini Squishy Turtle Crochet Pattern.

I’m so excited to introduce you to this new stuffed animal crochet pattern. The Mini Squishy Turtle has been designed to be a super quick project, with no sewing needed (aside from a quick little stitch to attach the back of the head to the shell).

The Mini Squishy Turtle crochet pattern has been designed using a combination of Premier Parfait Chunky and Premier Bloom Chenille yarns to create an adorable 4″ friend. If you’ve never used these yarns for an amigurumi project, then you’re missing out. These chenille style super bulky weight (6) yarns (which works up similar to a bulky (5) weight yarn) makes some of the most soft, squishy lovable stuffies. The yarn can be found online at Herrschners.com or Premieryarns.com.

Don’t have access to this yarn? No problem!

This pattern can be completed using ANY of your favourite amigurumi yarns as well. Just adjust the hook size accordingly and follow the pattern as written. The only thing that changes is the size of the safety eyes and finished product. Here’s an example of a keychain sized 3 inch Mini Squishy Turtle made using Scheepjes Stonewashed yarn (4), F (3.75mm) hook, and 6mm eyes.

Check out this post for some guidelines on how to adjust your hook and yarn.

The pattern is shown using 10.5mm flat black safety eyes. My favourite place to order from is Suncatcher Craft Eyes. For those of you wanting to sell or gift to kids under 3, the pattern also includes a video link for embroidering sleepy eyes.

Notes:

  • #sc, eg. (2sc, 3sc, etc) shows the number of scs to be completed in the indicated st
  • Sts listed between brackets are all worked in the same st, eg. (hdc, dc)
  • I highly recommend using a stitch marker to help keep track of the rounds for the body/head
  • The pattern has both a ‘sew’ and no sew option for the limbs shown in the Body/Head section.

Recommended Sequence:  It is highly recommended to complete the pattern in the order the pieces are written (especially if you are using the no-sew option for the limbs).

Round 11: *sc, scdec* 3 times (6)
Stuff the rest of the head lightly
Flatten and sc through both sides (3 sts).
End off, leaving a 12 inch tail if sewing.

Shell:

The shell is worked in one piece from the top down in continuous rounds.  Check out this helpful video for creating quick, almost perfect, jogless stripes

Option 1: Sewing the Legs/Tail/Head to the body
If you are sewing the Legs/Tail/Head to your body then ‘sc in each st’ for Round 11 .

Option 2:  Crochet Legs/Tail/Head to the body
If you are crocheting the Legs/Tail/Head to your body please follow the pattern as written for the Shell. For assistance in crocheting the pieces on see Video:

Rounds 7-8: sc in each st (30), change to Pink after Round 8, end off Blue
Round 9: *spike st 2 rounds down, sc in the next 4 sts* 6 times (30)
Note:  Add a stitch marker to the back loop of the first stitch of Round 9.  This will help with the placement for attaching yarn in Round 11.
Round 10: In FLO for the round, *sc, 3hdc* 15 times, join to first st  (60), end off Pink leaving a 12” tail to attach the back of the head to the shell.

Round 11: Option 1:  In BLO of Round 9,  of the shell for the round, attach green in stitch indicated by stitch marker. sc in each st (30)

Option 2: Working in BLO of Round 9 of the shell for the round, attach green in stitch indicates by the stitch marker
Note:  The back loops can be tricky to see (especially if using fuzzy/chenille like yarn), before beginning the round, its recommended that you use stitch markers to map out where each piece will sit.
Hold the head (stitch marker face up) in front of your work (shell).
Working through both pieces, sc in the next 3sts.
Working through the body only, sc in the next 2 sts.  Hold the 1st leg in front of your work (shell).  Working through both pieces, sc in the next 3 sts.

Working through the body only, sc in the next 2 sts.  Hold the 3rd leg in front of your work (shell).  Working through both pieces, sc in the next 3 sts.
Working through the body only, sc in the next 2 sts.  Hold the 4th leg in front of your work (shell).  Working through both pieces, sc in the next 3 sts.
Working through the body only, sc in the next 2 sts (30).

Note:  To avoid having the tails slide out, tie them on the inside of the shell

Round 12: *sc in the next 3 sts, scdec* 6 times (24)
Round 13: *sc in the next 2 sts, scdec* 6 times (18)
Note: begin stuffing
Round 14: *sc, scdec* 6 times (12)
Round 15: *scdec* 6 times (6)
Finish stuffing, end off leaving a 6” tail, cinch the remaining sts together and weave in the end

Sewing Placement – I highly recommend pinning ALL parts in place BEFORE sewing to make sure everything sits properly and is to your liking 🙂

Note:  Disregard sewing the Legs/Head/Tail if you’ve already crocheted them on.
Head:
Place the head (with the stitch marker facing the belly of the turtle at approx Round 11 of the shell.  Sew in place.
Embroider on a mouth if desired.
Tail:
Place the tail on the opposite side of the head on Round 11 of the shell.  Sew in place.
Legs:
Place 2 legs on each side of Round 11 of the Shell.  Space them out with approx 2 sts between all the pieces.  Sew in place. eg. Tail, 2sts, Leg, 2sts, Leg, 2sts, Head
Back of the Head:
Using the Pink tail from Round 12 of the shell weave the tail up through the body and out Round 6 of the shell (Pink Round).  Pull up the head of the Turtle and sew the back of the head (approx. Round 6 or 7 of the head) to Round 6 of the shell.
