How to Crochet the Candy Cane Santa Amigurumi Pattern

The Santa Candy Cane Holders work up quickly and easily, with minimal sewing. The head and body are worked in one piece. This mean that only the facial features need to be sewn or embroidered on.

The Candy Cane Ornament Collection uses WeCrochet’s Brava Worsted Yarn (4) and Brava Tweed Worsted (4) for a soft, colourful finish. These yarns were a pleasure to work with, adding the perfect touch to each ornament. Brava Worsted yarn is available on the WeCrochet website, or you can use any favourite medium (4) weight yarn. This pattern uses 6mm flat back black pearls hot-glued in place for the eyes, adding a cute, polished look. Alternatively, 6mm safety eyes or embroidered eyes work well too. Please note that flat back pearls and safety eyes can be a choking hazard for children under 3.

Why Does the Candy Cane Look as it Does?

The candy cane has a history dating back to the 17th century when European Christians began using sugar sticks to decorate Christmas trees. The familiar cane shape can be traced back to 1670, representing a Shepherd’s crook, and the red-and-white stripes appeared about 50 years later. There’s not a lot of historical evidence to determine exactly when or how the stripes or peppermint flavour came about, yet the candy cane continues to remain a beloved holiday tradition.

Candy Traditions Around The World

Holiday candy traditions vary widely across the world, each reflecting the unique flavours and customs of its culture.

  • In the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, candy canes are iconic, symbolizing the Christmas season with their peppermint flavour and red-and-white stripes. These are very often hung in Christmas trees as decorations.
  • In Italy, Christmas often means enjoying torrone, a nougat made with honey, nuts, and egg whites, offering a chewy sweetness perfect for family gatherings.
  • Meanwhile, Germany delights in marzipan, a sweet almond-based confection molded into various festive shapes like fruits, animals, and seasonal characters.
  • In the UK, Christmas crackers sometimes contain foil-wrapped chocolates, adding a bit of sugary joy to the traditional table setting.
  • In Japan, Christmas is celebrated with cakes, and seasonal candy selections include strawberry-flavoured treats as a favourite.
  • Mexican holiday treats often feature spicy and sweet flavours. Tamarind candies dusted with chili powder are a popular treat in Mexico, Thailand and the Philipines.
  • Sweden celebrates with knäck, a toffee made of sugar, butter, and cream, boiled to perfection for a sticky, rich treat.

Each of these candies is popular in it’s country, bringing loved ones together with something deliciously sweet for the season.
