New Pattern Release – Pocket Pal Bat Crochet Pattern!

A new ‘spooky’ friend has joined the Pocket Pal Series! Meet, the Pocket Pal Bat. The bat was designed to be the perfect decoration for Halloween or a great addition to your craft table. This easy to follow pattern will help you create a cute, quick friend.

The Bat is shown using Scheepjes Stone Washed Yarn in Black Onyx, which is an aran weight (4), super soft cotton/acrylic blend yarn.  I absolutely loved the marled effect this yarn has, it gives a whole new look and feel to these stuffies. Using the Scheepjes Stone Washed yarn the bat is approximately 5 inches tall, plus it comes in a variety of colours and can be found online at Annies.

Feel free to experiment with your favourite Amigurumi yarns as well! Check out this post for some guidelines on how.

The pattern is shown using 10.5mm safety eyes, from Suncatcher Craft Eyes (Danielle is fantastic and I highly recommend her eyes). For those of you wanting to sell or gift to kids under 3, the pattern also includes instruction for crochet eyes.

All the patterns in the Pocket Pal Series work up quickly and easily with minimal sewing required. The head and body are worked in one piece with the option to crochet the feet in as you go. The patterns also include video tutorials to assist if you need it. Since they work up so quickly the Pocket Pal Animals are perfect to make as a last minute gift or take to your next craft market.

  • #sc, eg. (2sc, 3sc, etc) shows the number of scs to be completed in the indicated st
  • Sts listed between brackets are all worked in the same st, eg. (hdc, dc)
  • I highly recommend using a stitch marker to help keep track of the rounds for the body/head
  • The pattern has both a ‘sew’ and no sew option for the limbs shown in the Body/Head section.

It is highly recommended to complete the Pocket Pal patterns in the order they are written (especially if you are using the no-sew option for the Feet).

Wings: (make 2)

Row 10:    scdec, sc in the next 3 sts, (sc, picot, sc) in the next st, sc in the next 5 sts (11)
End off leaving a 12 inch tail for  sewing.  Using the beginning tail located on the top inside edge (if you used Option 2 to begin your wing, then weave the beginning tail along Row 1 to the inside edge of the wing) , fold up the first 4-5 rows like an accordian and sew through to secure in place. This will add extra stability to the top of the wing so that it will hold itself up easier.  See End of Video: https://youtu.be/tylTGSq1BKc

Round 6:    *sc in the next 5 sts, 2sc* 3 times (21)
Round 7:    *sc in the next 6 sts, 2sc* 3 times (24)
Rounds 8-9:    sc in each st.
End off by ss to the next st.  Leave an 18 inch tail for sewing.  Flatten the ear and place on a hard surface with the stitch marker showing at the edge closest to you.  Fold the edge furthest away from you (about ⅓ of the way) towards the front of the ear..  ***Don’t forget the front of the 2nd ear will be on the opposite side***.  Sew the fold in place.

How to assemble your Pocket Pal Bat Crochet Pattern

Sewing Placement – I highly recommend pinning ALL parts of your Pocket Pal Bat in place BEFORE sewing to make sure everything sits properly and is to your liking 🙂

Note:  Disregard sewing the feet if you’ve already crocheted them on.

Feet:
Place the Feet at approx Round 5 of the body about 5 sts apart.
Sew in place.  When sewing the feet in place I sewed the top of the last FULL ROUND DOWN instead of just the sts from crocheting the round together.
Wings:
With Row 1 of the wing at the top.  Place the inside of the wings on either side of Round 16 of the body.  Stretch the inside of the wing down each side of the body (the bottom will sit at approx. Round 7).  Sew in place along the inside of each wing.
Ears:
Place the folded side (top) facing the front of the head at either side Round 30 of the head.  Extend the ears down each side of the head (down to Round 23).  Sew in place along Round 9 of each ear.
Facial Shaping/Embroidery:
To create the face…
– Add a little shaping to the inner bottom edge of the eyes.
– Add a little black mouth with white teeth.
– Add white to the outer edge to highlight the eyes.
– Add a little pink nose in the centre of the face.
– Add pink to the bottom outer edge of the eyes for cheeks.
